“Metropolis” accompanied by live jazz score performed by Les Sorciers Perdus
Adm. $12.Ad. / $8.Ch.
Fritz Lang’s 1927 German Expressionist science-fiction classic, Metropolis was made as a silent movie but has stood the test of time and tells the story of a dystopian future divided by class and a heroine and hero determined to restore justice and harmony – despite all odds! Epic in size and scope, Metropolis paved the way for countless science fiction films to come, influencing films by George Lucas, Ridley Scott, and countless others.
This grand film and music event will feature a performance and new score by Maine trumpeter/composer Mark Tipton, with his jazz ensemble Les Sorciers Perdus performing live accompaniment to the screening. Tipton’s score blends jazz, rock, and classical styles into a cohesive whole as it rides along with Lang’s futuristic visual tour-de-force. Get ready to experience a world full of dreary workers, colossal machines, greedy tycoons, stalwart heroes, a sexy robot, and a subversive mad scientist!
Les Sorciers Perdus was last seen and heard in Belfast accompanying The General to an audience swept away by the story and the musical performance. This rare event is a once only experience. A classic film and live jazz as good as it gets.
“Not to be missed…One of the great masterpieces of moviemaking, accompanied with the inspired phantasmagoric music of Les Sorciers Perdus…I saw their show at SPACE [Gallery] last year and it was a complete knockout!” (Dave Wade, WMPG)
“Tipton’s new [silent film] score…feels a little jazzy, a little soulful, but never old.” (Ray Routhier, Portland Press Herald)
“When Mark Tipton’s trumpet enters, it’s ensnaring, something you can give yourself over to entirely…” (Sam Pfeifle, Portland Phoenix)
